Jon Stewart calls out Donald Trump after China trip
During the Monday episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart mocked Donald Trump for reportedly walking away empty-handed from his recent meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The political commentator began his monologue, saying, “[Trump was] gone for a couple days in China, we were scared. ‘Where’s daddy? I’m so scared. Where is daddy?’ But now he’s home, and I’m sure he brought home all the goodies from China. Because as we all know, nobody — and I mean nobody — is tougher on ‘China’ rhymes with ‘Vagina’ — than Donald J. Trump.”
Stewart proceeded to show some clips of Trump’s past statements about China, where he made remarks like “I’m the toughest person on China anywhere in the world.” Commenting on the montage, Stewart joked, “Let’s see that famous toughness in action. Let ‘em have it!” before playing some videos from Trump’s recent China visit.
The clips included Trump making positive statements about China. At one point, Trump tells President Xi, “You’re a great leader. I say it to everybody. You’re a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I say it anyway because it’s true. I only say the truth.”
Stewart went on to say, “So what did you get, Mr. President? Trade barrier down? Help with Iran? Some of them are delicious rare Earth metals?” To answer the question, the comedian then played a clip of Trump’s interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier. When asked what the most “significant, specific thing” that he gained from his meeting with President Xi was, Trump stated, “I think the most important thing is relationship. It’s all about relationship.”
Slamming Trump’s response, Stewart said, “So, nothing. You got nothing!” He added, “You flew to China… to personally confront our rival superpower on the escalating trade and geopolitical tensions between us, and all you came back with was his Instagram? ‘The tariffs are in place, but we’re on the close friends story now. Well, he’s on mine.’”
