It has been over 100 days since the Nancy Guthrie case came to light without any significant updates — and now JonBenet Ramsey’s father, John, is offering critical advice to the Guthrie family. After Nancy vanished from her Arizona home, few people understand the suffocating spotlight her family now lives under, except one.
John Ramsey lost his six-year-old daughter, JonBenet, in 1996, and then spent years waiting for an answer; now, he has stepped forward with advice for the Guthrie family to not trust the police to get it right.
JonBenet Ramsey’s father John urges Nancy Guthrie family to ‘ask questions’
In a conversation with investigative journalist Brian Entin on “Brian Entin Investigates,” JonBenet Ramsey’s father, John, laid out what he believes the Guthries must do as the police investigate the Nancy Guthrie case.
He suggested, “Don’t assume the police are doing everything they can do.” Moreover, he counseled, “They may be, but don’t assume that,” adding, “Don’t assume they know what they’re doing. They may, but don’t assume that. And really scrutinize what they’re doing. Ask questions.”
Ramsey’s own painful history gave weight to his words. He described how Boulder police treated him and his late wife, Patsy, blaming it on ego and inexperience, as he noted, “I think there was a level of territorialism involved, and that’s a huge problem in our country.” He told Entin that he saw echoes of that same stubbornness in the handling of Guthrie’s disappearance, where early reports suggested a standoff between local authorities and the FBI.
In advising the Guthries to treat the investigation like a medical emergency, he was being practical. He said, “It’s like they say when you’re in a hospital you got to have an advocate,” adding, “You got to be an advocate in your system. Don’t assume the police — you know, police departments at best are multi-purpose agencies.”
Ramsey also said, “You can’t do everything well.” He wants the family to press for the use of investigative genetic genealogy and to bring in outside experts, such as the Cold Case Foundation.
For JonBenet Ramsey’s father, John, the pain of his daughter’s story never faded, but for the Nancy Guthrie case, he wanted justice.
