Public disapproval of President Donald Trump’s economic leadership has reached a record high. A new poll average shows his negative ratings now exceed even the levels seen after the January 6 Capitol attack in 2021. The Iran War and consequent fuel price hikes seem to have influenced this result.
Donald Trump’s approval rating drops in new poll
According to data compiled by RealClearPolitics, Donald Trump’s average disapproval rating stands at 58.3%. That surpasses the previous high of 57.9% recorded during the turbulent weeks following the Capitol insurrection. The numbers represent an aggregation of multiple major surveys and are the lowest standing of his political career.
A CBS News/YouGov poll released on Tuesday counted the depth of public frustration. Seven in 10 Americans described themselves as either “angry” or “frustrated” with the president’s handling of the economy.
The decline in public confidence traces back to late February, when Trump started a war against Iran. The subsequent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global oil shipments and sent domestic fuel prices climbing sharply. The economic strain has made the cost of living the center of national discourse.
Trump’s own statements have intensified perceptions that he remains disconnected from household financial pressures. During discussions about a potential peace deal with Iran, he acknowledged that he does not consider the economic burden on American families. “Not even a little bit,” he said. He has also referred to the cost of petrol as “peanuts,” a phrase critics say reveals a gap between his personal wealth and the reality facing working households.
Furthermore, Trump gave conflicting assessments of the Iran war’s public standing. “Everyone tells me [the war] is unpopular, but I think it’s very popular,” he said. Moments later, he added, “Whether it’s popular or not popular, I have to do it, because I’m not going to let the world be blown up on my watch. Not gonna happen.”
Now, the new poll data shows mounting political risk for an administration with impending midterm elections.
