Betul Yazici hardly gets any camera time on Below Deck Down Under. Probably due to the fact she’s not a hot mess. Even still, this deckhand is the best part of Season 4.
This franchise typically makes the wrong yachties famous. It tends to shine its brightest spotlight on the crew members who bring the drama, which makes sense, but only to a point. In times like these, fans need comedy, heart, and stories of resilience, all of which Betul carries in spades. Yet, since Betul steers clear of the drama, she is hardly ever on our screens, and this feels like a major ball dropped by production this season.
So, consider this our appreciation post for Betul. For everything Betul has overcome in her life, alongside everything she is doing to help keep Season 4 afloat, this is why we cannot help but adore Betul this season on BDDU.
Betul Yazici has an inspiring backstory
As Betul explained at the start of Season 4, she grew up in a deeply religious and controlling household in Turkey. “Where I come from, working on a deck is considered a man’s job,” she said. So, “When I was a kid, my father didn’t even want us to go to school, because my father’s mentality was like, women didn’t work, and it was a man’s world. They don’t want us to have rights or words.”
“Growing up, the dynamics in my family were not stable,” Betul continued. “I never felt like I had a father. He was married to three women at the same time and was narcissistic.” Furthermore, she revealed, “My mom left when I was nine,” and “There was a physical cycle of violence, so now I don’t talk to my parents. But I teach myself everything.”
But thankfully, her “grandparents” were always in her corner. They snuck her into “a school,” where she learned vital skills. And as a result, Betul gained a new life motto. “Now I believe,” she stressed, “if you want something, you have to fight for it.”
And fight, Betul did. She entered the yachting industry in 2019, working primarily on smaller boats. Over time, she successfully scaled her experience to where she is now, a 60-meter yacht. Betul has the kind of backstory and grit that makes viewers come together and root for her success, which is why BDDU Season 4 belongs to her and her alone.
The Below Deck Down Under crew have a hard worker in Betul
All Betul wants to do this season is work hard and rise above societal norms. Not shockingly, that is exactly what she has done all season long. Instead of getting involved in the drama, Betul has focused on making gains in her position. She even called the docking in Episode 15, even though she was admittedly nervous about this task.
“Very good work,” Captain Jason Chambers praised Betul over the radio following this particular docking. He then walked down to where Betul stood, further praising her with a “Well done.” In her confessional, Betul smiled and danced. “This is a really big success,” she admitted. Then, she joked, “Am I better than everyone?”
Yes, she is, in this writer’s opinion at least. But proving my point, Betul is one of the hardest-working yachties on Season 4. Captain Jason even had to convince her to take a break midway through this season, since, as Betul noted, breaks gave her “anxiety, because I want to work.” Captain Jason then poked fun at her, letting her superior know over the radio that Betul was “standing around doing nothing.”
“I’m that close to losing my sh*t,” Betul joked back. She eventually caved and took her break. But this hardworking queen still had to convince herself in her talking head that, “Girl, you’re doing your best. At least you’re trying to do your best.”
Her confidence and humor have made her an instant fan favorite
Throughout this season, Betul has either served as the voice of reason or the much-needed comedic background character. Instead of fighting in sprinter vans, she took naps. And whenever her English faltered, her “meows” reigned supreme. Additionally, when the heads of department were at each other’s throats during Episode 17, Betul chose to lie down in the crew mess, playing with her belly button like an unbothered icon instead of adding fuel to their rather dumb fires.
Additionally, Betul has also served the BEST faces this season. When Captain Jason pulled her in for a hug in Episode 16, her smushed face went from shocked to acceptance in seconds. And when tasked with complimenting Ben Robinson on his sphinx cake. “It’s good,” her voice said, even though her face absolutely screamed otherwise.
As a result, in a recent post, Bravo shared a meme of Betul, asking, “Am I better than everyone?” And in the comments, everyone said YES. “I know we can’t have a full cast of Betuls, but thank you for giving us one,” one fan penned to the producers of BDDU Season 4. And, giving voice to pretty much every viewer this season, another asked, “Bring her back next season!” since Betul is “a great counterbalance to all the drama.”
Below Deck Down Under is streaming on Peacock.
