Chelsea Handler has revealed a dating story involving celebrity chef Bobby Flay that didn’t exactly leave her hungry for a second helping. The comedian shared the awkward encounter while appearing on Kristin Cavallari’s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast.
There she was asked to recall a bad celebrity date she had never spoken about publicly. As it turns out, Handler immediately knew which story to tell.

As reported by Page Six, Handler quickly brought up Bobby Flay when Cavallari asked her to reveal a memorable celebrity dating disaster. According to the comedian, the pair were introduced through mutual connections and spent some time talking on the phone before meeting in person. During that early flirting stage, Handler was staying at a hotel with friends when Flay offered to order room service for the group.
“He knew the hotel well,” Handler explained. “He wanted to order food for us.” The gesture sounded thoughtful enough. But the mood reportedly changed when the food arrived along with a surprise bill.
Handler recalled being confused when hotel staff handed her the check for the meal Flay had ordered. “And I’m like, ‘What?’” she remembered.
The “Chelsea Lately” alum claimed someone later told her Flay had a reputation for being frugal. That information didn’t sit particularly well with her. “I hate cheap,” Handler admitted. “If you’re penurious, I’m not interested in you.”
She went on to explain that generosity is important to her and that she prefers people who are equally open-handed when it comes to spending money.
Despite the room-service mishap, Handler said she still agreed to go on an actual date with the “Beat Bobby Flay” star. Unfortunately, the evening didn’t improve her opinion. “It was not a match,” she said. Handler declined to provide many details about what happened next, only describing the experience as “messy.”
The dating revelation comes nearly two years after Flay appeared on Cavallari’s podcast and joked about unsuccessfully trying to take the reality star to dinner. Cavallari turned him down at the time, saying she was burned out on dating.
Today, Flay is in a relationship with fellow chef Brooke Williamson. As for Handler, it seems one unexpected hotel bill was enough to ensure this celebrity romance never made it past the appetizer course.
