Carmen Electra came clean about why her marriage to NBA superstar Dennis Rodman ended. The couple’s 1998 marriage made headlines, as did their split roughly six months later. The duo tied the knot in Las Vegas in November 1998, at the Little Chapel of Flowers.
However, Dennis filed for an annulment a mere nine days later, reportedly at Carmen’s request. The couple decided to reconcile before finally pulling the plug.
Now, the Playboy star and actress is sharing what led to their breakup.
The pair got married in the 1990s
Carmen, whose recent Playboy bunny ensemble dropped jaws at The Abbey’s 35th anniversary, opened up on the Legally Goff podcast. “It was just too hard to continue to keep up with him and his friends,” Carmen explained. “It was constant drinking.”
She continued, “I just remember looking at myself in the mirror, I was at home, and I didn’t recognize myself. I had bags under my eyes. My face was puffy. I’m in my 20s!” Carmen added, “I thought, ‘It’s got to stop. It has to stop.'”
After receiving a self-help book as a gift, Carmen decided that she needed to get out of her marriage to Dennis. The book inspired her to continue exploring. “So I went to the store, and I would just walk in a bookstore and kind of blindly go, ‘Okay, guide me and take me [to] what I need now.’ I just thought, ‘I’ve got to get away from him because what good is going to come out of this?'” Carmen remarked.
Still, the model maintained that she shared a strong connection with Dennis. “It wasn’t a made-up story. It wasn’t a publicity stunt,” she explained. The superstar continued, “It was real love,” noting, “it’s sad, but it had to end.”
Finally, Carmen filed for divorce in April 1999. Although Dennis wanted to try to reconcile with her, she would return the gifts that he gave her post-split.
