Charlize Theron may be one of Hollywood’s most successful stars, but don’t expect her daughters to inherit a cushy, work-free future. The Oscar winner recently shared her thoughts on money, parenting, and independence, making it clear that her children will be expected to earn their own way.
As it turns out, growing up with an Academy Award-winning mom doesn’t come with an automatic financial safety net.
Despite massive Hollywood success, Charlize Theron’s daughters will have to earn their own money
During a recent appearance on the “Therapuss with Jake Shane” podcast, Charlize opened up about the lessons she hopes to teach her daughters, Jackson and August, as they get older.
One of those lessons? Don’t expect luxury from day one. “First of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun because you’re going to crash it,” Charlize joked on the podcast. “You’re a new driver. So, we’re not getting, like, the nice car up front.”
The actress explained that she wants her children to understand the value of earning things rather than having them handed over. “We need a little bit of experience, and we’re going to earn it,” she added.
That philosophy extends well beyond cars. Charlize told host Jake Shane that she doesn’t plan on financially supporting her daughters forever and believes having a job is an important part of growing up.
“It’s too soon to kind of say where they’re going to end up,” she said. “They just need to get a job that pays them because I don’t want to support them for the rest of life.”
Summer jobs are also part of the plan. Charlize revealed that whenever she visits Starbucks with her children, she uses the employees as examples of the kind of work ethic she hopes they’ll develop.
“Do you see how friendly?” she recalled asking them. “You have to be that friendly every morning at 6 a.m.”
The conversation echoed comments Charlize has made previously about raising her children on her own terms. The actress, who adopted Jackson in 2012 and August in 2015, has often spoken about her experience as a single mother.
During a 2025 appearance on ”Call Her Daddy,” Charlize described choosing motherhood independently as “one of the healthiest decisions I ever made.”
