It’s like comparing the length of a lake with the height of a hill and calling one taller than the other. Donald Trump faced widespread online ridicule after he compared the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, with some of the world’s tallest buildings—One World Trade Center, Sears Tower, and the Empire State Building.
That he was talking about renovating a pool when the world is waiting for an end to the Iran war became another subject matter for ridicule.
Donald Trump received some wild online responses after he fixated on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
This awkward incident happened during an Oval Office press gaggle when Trump displayed a poster in which the pool—a horizontal structure—was placed side by side vertically with those skyscrapers. “So if you lay it (skyscrapers) on its side, you take two or three of them to fill it (the pool),” he said.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is 2,030 feet long and 167 feet wide, with its V-shaped bottom ranging from 18 inches deep along the edges to 30 inches deep in the center. It lies at the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington.
The internet exploded soon after Trump’s comments surfaced. “To be fair, the way things are going in his presidency, it’s only a matter of time until those skyscrapers are lying on their side,” political advocacy group Majority Democrats posted on X.
ABC’s late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel, did not want to miss the opportunity for mocking either. “That pool, by the way, is the same size it was before he decided to paint it for $15 million, but it’s bigger than skyscrapers now,” he said at his show.
The elusive solution to the Iran war added to the mockery. “Trump is not winning, but he did make the Reflecting Pool blue!” wrote X user Jon.
“America is in desperate need of a reflecting pool the size of China’s tallest building. We should all sleep better at night knowing that our president is laser focused on what is the most important. Let’s hope Trump is also all in on the Arch and his ballroom. Priorities, people!” wrote Jeff Clabault, self-described as a ‘Dismayed Republican who is Tired of MAGA calling themselves Republicans’.
