Royal Cancels Future Outings as They’re Placed on Lung Transplant Waiting List

We won’t be seeing Norway’s Crown Princess at public events in the near future. Mette-Marit has bigger things to worry about these days, most notably her health. The mother of two is on the waiting list to undergo a lung transplant.

The Crown Princess has an incurable lung condition. By all accounts, her condition is worsening, which has led to her staying out of the public eye.

Mette-Marit is married to the Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the Norwegian throne.

By the sounds of it, Mette-Marit may need a lifeline to prolong her life. In a June 5 statement by the Royal House of Norway, Are Holm said, “The progression of the Crown Princess’s lung disease is serious.” Holm is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Oslo and Senior Consultant and respiratory specialist at Oslo University Hospital.

The Professor adds that after conducting numerous medical tests on her, she’s on a “waiting list for patients who will undergo a lung transplant as soon as a suitable donor becomes available.”

Because of the pending operation, the statement adds that the Crown Princess won’t carry out any official engagements. In March, Norwegian outlet NRK noted that she’d been missing from state visits as her condition worsens. According to the publication, this was due to her deteriorating condition.

A disease like Mette-Marit’s can have devastating consequences. It occurs when lung tissue becomes scarred, reducing the oxygen supply to the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. The official name of her condition is pulmonary fibrosis.

News of her needing a transplant comes a few months after her son was arrested over knife threats. Marius Borg Høiby is facing some serious charges, including rape and claims of violent behavior.

As she waits for a possible operation, Mette-Marit’s royal schedule has nothing penciled in for the next two weeks.
