CNN anchor Jake Tapper condemned President Donald Trump for walking out in the middle of his interview with NBC anchor Kristen Welker in the “Meet the Press” segment.
The rainy interview was dramatically cut short as Trump launched a verbal attack and unclipped his mic when pressed about sensitive issues.
CNN anchor Jake weighs in on Trump’s “unhinged” Meet the Press tantrum
Jake Tapper came to the support of Kristen Welker, who had travelled a long way to Wisconsin for the sit-down with Trump. The president’s irritation began when Welker hit him with live reality checks on the “anti-weaponization” fund and the January 6 Capitol riot, and his ongoing allegations that the 2020 election and the recent California primary were “rigged”.
When Welker continuously pressed him for actual evidence, Trump quickly pivoted to a verbal attack on the reporter, stating, “You’re crooked, and Meet the Press is crooked, and so is ABC and CBS and CNN. You’re one-sided, crooked networks. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling.” He also told Welker to “straighten out your press” and walked off the jet.
Tapper, often considered a bigger critic of former President Joe Biden than the current president, immediately came to the support of Welker and called Trump’s exit “wild, unhinged stuff”.
Tapper used the CNN afternoon podcast “The Lead with Jake Tapper” to reinforce a fundamental rule of political journalism: asking tough questions about a candidate’s policy changes, past legal actions, and explicit public statements is literally a reporter’s job description, not a partisan attack.
The long-running feud between Jake Tapper and Donald Trump spans a decade of viral on-air clashes, from Tapper’s aggressive fact-checking during the 2016 campaign to Trump labeling him a “biased hack” and “fake news” anchor.
