Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy Jr. shared a private meeting in New York City that brought together two of the most famous faces of the 1990s. A new biography is shedding fresh light on the little-known encounter, revealing what happened when the Princess of Wales met America’s most eligible bachelor behind closed doors.
It sounds like the setup for a Hollywood movie: a princess, a Kennedy, a luxury hotel, and a secret meeting hidden from the cameras that usually followed them everywhere.
What a new biography says about Princess Diana and JFK Jr.’s New York encounter
According to “The Kennedys & the Windsors” by author Caroline Hallemann, the pair met just once in December 1995 at New York’s Carlyle Hotel.
The meeting was arranged because JFK Jr. hoped to convince Diana to appear on the cover of George, the political lifestyle magazine he had recently launched. Determined to avoid publicity, Kennedy reportedly entered through a back entrance before being escorted to Diana’s suite by her private secretary, Patrick Jephson.
“It was a little bit cloak and dagger,” Jephson recalled in comments featured in PEOPLE.
While Kennedy arrived with hopes of landing a major celebrity cover story, Diana had already decided she wasn’t interested in appearing in the fledgling publication. Following advice from Jephson, she believed the magazine had not yet established itself enough to warrant her endorsement.
Still, she reportedly declined gracefully, suggesting she might reconsider for a future milestone issue.
The conversation that followed appears to have left a lasting impression on both sides. Jephson described Kennedy as respectful and somewhat vulnerable, while Diana helped put him at ease. The two chatted over coffee and, according to the longtime royal aide, there was a natural chemistry between them.
“She was quick-witted and fun to be with,” Jephson said, adding that the encounter carried a slightly flirtatious energy.
At the time, both Diana and JFK Jr. were navigating lives shaped by extraordinary family legacies. Diana was rebuilding her public identity amid her separation from then-Prince Charles, while Kennedy was working to establish himself beyond the shadow of Camelot.
Though the meeting lasted only a short time, it united two cultural icons who understood the unique pressures of fame better than almost anyone else. They ultimately parted on warm terms.
