Bill Gates is once again addressing his controversial connection to Jeffrey Epstein, this time under oath before Congress. During a closed-door appearance before the House Oversight Committee, the Microsoft co-founder claimed the disgraced financier attempted to blackmail him using information about his personal life.
Years after repeatedly calling his association with Epstein a major mistake, Gates is now offering a detailed account of how the relationship came to an end.
Bill Gates says Epstein used personal information in an attempt to pressure him
According to a copy of his prepared remarks, Gates told lawmakers that Epstein became aware of his infidelity during his marriage to Melinda French Gates and later attempted to use that information against him.
“I learned Epstein had become aware of sensitive information about my personal life,” Gates said, adding that the financier allegedly tried to pressure him into re-engaging after their professional discussions ended.
Gates maintained that the affair had nothing to do with his interactions with Epstein and stressed that the effort to pressure him ultimately failed. The billionaire, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, also reiterated a point he has made for years: meeting Epstein was a serious mistake.
“I should never have met with Epstein,” Gates told the committee.
According to his testimony, the relationship began in 2011 after introductions through individuals involved in philanthropy and global health initiatives. Gates said Epstein claimed he could help attract billions of dollars in charitable donations for health-focused projects around the world.
Over the next few years, Gates participated in a handful of meetings and discussions centered on potential fundraising structures and donor networks. However, by 2014, he concluded Epstein could not deliver on those promises.
“It was clear that no one in the group was interested enough to move forward,” Gates said, adding that he cut off communication afterward. Gates also told lawmakers he never visited Epstein’s private island, Florida residence, or New Mexico ranch, and said he never witnessed any criminal behavior.
The testimony comes as House investigators continue examining Epstein’s network of influential associates. Committee chairman James Comer emphasized ahead of the hearing that Gates is not accused of wrongdoing but may have information relevant to the broader investigation.
