Robert Downey Jr. shares his take on playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday
Robert Downey Jr. talked about playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday in a new interview with CBR. When asked about the villain’s importance that the actor might have learned about while filming, the 61-year-old actor said, “I’m quite odd in that I try to stay as removed from a subjective experience of things as I can… I try to feel like I’m in the writing room.”
He added, “I try to feel all that stuff. But eventually, there are so many big shoes to step into that I just have to go, ‘What hasn’t been done as well as it can be done yet?’ We’re always looking for that opportunity.”
Furthermore, RDJ expressed his gratitude for the upcoming Avengers titles, Doomsday and Secret Wars. The Oppenheimer star said, “There’s an incredible amount of gratitude we have going into these two. One epic at a time. Doomsday… just the gratitude to be able to do it. To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right.”
In the same interview, the actor also emphasized the importance of having a solid antagonist and how it is crucial for the success of any major blockbuster. Downey Jr. remarked, “But you’re only as good as your bad guy.” Moreover, he compared Doomsday to Infinity War and stated, “And again, the one thing everybody could rally around (in Infinity War) is, ‘You’re going to have to contend with [Josh] Brolin.’” Notably, Josh Brolin took on the role of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The actor’s complex portrayal of the character went on to earn huge praise from fans.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on December 18, with Secret Wars scheduled for next year.
