Judge Judy Appeals Dismissal of Defamation Lawsuit Over Menendez Brothers Story

Judge Judy (Judy Sheindlin) is reportedly not giving up the fight after facing defeat in the lawsuit against the parent company of the National Enquirer and In Touch.

A news outlet reports that Judy Sheindlin has formally appealed the dismissal of her high-profile case against tabloids that mistakenly linked her to the convicted Menendez brothers. The case is set against Accelerate360 and A360 Media, escalating the legal battle to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Here’s why Judge Judy’s Menendez brothers lawsuit was originally dismissed

The legal feud ignited when InTouch Weekly published an online article boldly headlined, “Inside Judge Judy’s Quest to Save the Menendez Brothers Nearly 35 Years After Their Parents’ Murder.” A similar version of the story was quickly printed by its sister publication, the National Enquirer.

The articles claimed that Sheindlin was actively gunning to secure a new trial for Lyle and Erik Menendez, who are serving life sentences for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents—and went so far as to quote her calling the original trial “rigged.”

A tabloid reporter confused Judi Zamos, an alternate juror from the 1993 Menendez trial, with Judge Judy Sheindlin after seeing a video clip of the juror wearing a black top with a white collar that resembled a judicial robe.

The lawsuit argues that Sheindlin has never made the comments attributed to her, nor did she appear in a documentary that supported Erik and Lyle Menendez, who fatally shot their wealthy parents. Judy’s appeal has asked the higher court to review “all other appealable orders, rulings, judgments, decisions, and findings” connected to the case.

Sheindlin has commented that the false accusations have damaged her hard-earned reputation and character, while emphasizing the fact that the articles mixed her up with someone who had intervened in the trial for the Menendez brothers.
