A national survey released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) reveals a significant upward shift in the number of Americans who view President Donald Trump as an authoritarian threat.
This marks a steady increase from the 52% who held that view in early 2025, and the 56% recorded later that autumn. Conversely, only 38% of respondents view him as a “strong leader who should be given the power he needs to restore America’s greatness.
Recent poll results on Donald Trump perceptions show Americans see a “dangerous dictator”
According to the data, 59% of Americans now agree with the statement that “President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy.”
Davis Ingle, a White House spokesperson, told a news outlet, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024, when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda.”
He continued, saying, “No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more.”
The poll results come against the backdrop of an MoU between the USA and Iran, focusing on issues like extending the ceasefire for 60 days to finalize negotiations, opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a push for reducing nuclear stockpiling by Iran.
About two-thirds of Americans, 66 percent, hold an unfavorable view of Trump’s handling of the war with Iran, according to the poll. A majority, 51 percent, hold a very unfavorable view, while 15 percent hold a “somewhat unfavorable” view.
Donald Trump has long been in hot water with controversies regarding his policies, extravagant spending, and a dictator-like regime. The question remains whether more of the citizens are finding flaws with his methods.
