Amal Clooney is opening up about one of the biggest changes marriage brought into her life. The human rights lawyer says marrying George Clooney came with an unexpected sacrifice.
For more than a decade, the couple has worked to keep their family life private. But Amal recently admitted that balancing a high-profile marriage with a demanding legal career hasn’t always been easy.
Amal Clooney says marrying George Clooney cost her much of her privacy
Speaking at the Cartier Women’s Initiative event, Amal reflected on how her personal and professional lives changed after she married George in 2014. According to HELLO!, she said, “I used to have my work life and my personal life, and they could look quite different, and I was able to not have them mix.”
She explained that things shifted once she married the Oscar-winning actor. “And then I got married, and that changed quite a lot,” Amal said, according to HELLO!. She admitted she initially worried about how public appearances might affect the way she was viewed professionally.
“And at first I was kind of conscious of that one-dimensional view where I felt, well, I can’t be seen wearing this dress, or doing this, because I’m in front of a judge on Monday,” she said.
Marrying one of Hollywood’s biggest stars meant Amal could no longer keep her celebrated legal career separate from relentless public scrutiny. Every appearance and outing came at a personal cost. And that was giving up the clear boundary between courtroom and celebrity life. Over time, however, Amal said she stopped letting public perception dictate her choices.
“But it just doesn’t matter as much as living your life,” she explained. “So I wouldn’t allow that factor to stop me from doing things that were important for my family or my relationship.”
Privacy has remained a major priority throughout the Amal George Clooney marriage. The couple, who share eight-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, have repeatedly spoken about shielding their children from public attention.
George previously told GQ, “I have a goal of trying to protect; I don’t want pictures of my kids. We deal in very serious subject matters… and we don’t want to have photos of our kids out there.”
Amal echoed those concerns during an earlier interview with Glamour. “Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult,” she said, revealing that guests at their home are asked to leave their phones behind. She added, “We do the best we can to minimize any impact on our children. We don’t put our children out there.”
The couple now spends much of their time at their home in Provence, France, where they continue to keep family life away from the spotlight.
