Melania Trump voiced her support for the LGBTQ+ community in a recent social media post. Moreover, she also expressed opposition to transgender athletes in women’s sports. Her remarks came amid the latest ruling by the US Supreme Court allowing states to ban transgender athletes from competing in sports across high school and college levels.
Melania Trump’s statement after the Supreme Court transgender sports decision
Melania Trump took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her support for both the LGBTQIA+ community and the protection of female sports at the same time. She said, quoting from her #1 NYT bestseller, MELANIA, “As many of you may know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community. But we must also ensure that our female athletes are protected and respected.”
Further sharing the U.S. Supreme Court’s verdict about transgender athletes in women’s sports, she added, “The U.S. Supreme Court has now legally confirmed this opinion: “Under Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, may schools maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females? … The answer is yes.”
She mentioned that the country can do both at the same time, i.e., support the LGBTQ community and protect opportunities in sports for women. “Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair. Both ideals are essential,” she concluded.
This is not the first time the First Lady of the US has spoken about this topic, given she had a section dedicated to it in her 2024 memoir. She penned, “Today, some groups attempt to impose their ideologies on everyone, deepening the divisions in our society. One example is the ongoing debate over trans inclusion in sports, specifically when male-born athletes, who identify as female, compete against women.”
She further touched upon how the differences between women’s and transgender bodies could create unfairness in competition, giving the latter a significant physical advantage over the former.
