Taylor Swift’s reported wedding at Madison Square Garden has a surprising showbiz precedent in music history. The Grammy winner and Travis Kelce have been linked to a multi-day celebration in New York.
However, a new report said MSG has already hosted a famous stage-side ceremony. Sly Stone and Kathy Silva were married there in 1974 before his concert. Their gold-themed event turned the arena into both a music venue and a wedding site.
Sly Stone and Kathy Silva got married at MSG, claims report
In a recent People report, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce reportedly rented MSG. The New York Times first reported a smaller July 2 gathering. It also reported a larger July 3 celebration. People confirmed with New York City Hall that a permit was filed. It covered a tent or canopy for about 500 to 999 attendees. Still, the outlet noted the couple has not publicly confirmed the wedding reports.
Meanwhile, People said Sly Stone and Kathy Silva made MSG wedding history on June 5, 1974. The Sly & the Family Stone frontman married the model before more than 20,000 concertgoers. Before the event, Stone told Vogue, “I have a little boy now.” He said he did not want his son to be “a liar.” That meant saying “dada,” according to the report. Silva also told Vogue that love could push people to “go to extremes.”
Still, the planning was built around spectacle. People said Stephen Paley jokingly suggested Stone marry before his MSG show. Stone later recalled thinking, “I could be my own opening act.” In his 2023 memoir, he wrote, “I could do a gig.” He added he could “get paid, and get married” at the same time. The ceremony began around 9:30 p.m. and Bishop B.R. Stewart officiated the same. Halston dressed both bride and groom in gold. Afterwards, they held a private Waldorf-Astoria reception for around 400 guests. MSG later hosted another major wedding moment in 1982.
