Seth Meyers Roasts Donald Trump’s WHCD Speech With Mitch McConnell Jab

Seth Meyers mocked Donald Trump‘s White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech during a recent episode of A Closer Look. The late-night host focused on what he described as the crowd’s muted response. Meyers also joked that Mitch McConnell could have received a warmer reaction.

Seth used Mitch McConnell to highlight the crowd’s muted response to Trump

During A Closer Look, Meyers discussed Trump’s July 24 appearance at the rescheduled WHCD. The host suggested the president struggled to generate enthusiasm from those attending the event. He then used Mitch McConnell as the punchline for his observation.

“Trump is the first cool-down comic in history,” Meyers said. He then imagined McConnell being introduced as Trump’s opening act. “The crowd would have been more warmed up if they just rolled out Mitch McConnell,” he joked.

Meyers also mocked Trump’s comments about his own speech. The president reportedly criticized the material and said only one joke worked. That prompted Meyers to question why the speech continued for more than an hour.

“I’m sorry, there was one joke you liked in your whole speech, and you still went an hour and five minutes?” Meyers asked. He then joked about Trump having one good joke and several maybes before continuing.

The comedian also referenced Trump’s repeated discussion of building a ballroom. Meyers quipped, “For all your talk about building ballrooms, can you not read one?” He then compared the audience’s expressions to Matt Damon at the end of The Odyssey.

Trump’s appearance at the WHCD had already attracted attention before Meyers discussed it. The event took place on July 24 after being rescheduled. Meyers’ commentary added another layer to the online conversation surrounding the president’s performance.

Meyers’ comments also reflected his broader style of political satire. He regularly combines current events with exaggerated jokes and cultural references. His latest segment once again made Trump’s public appearances the subject of his comedy.
