President Donald Trump tapped the late Senator Lindsey Graham’s casket during his funeral on Tuesday, according to TMZ. After finishing his roughly 12-minute tribute, Trump gave the casket two taps before returning to his seat. Graham died on July 11 at age 71 after suffering a fatal aorta tear following a visit to Ukraine.
Trump delivered his eulogy at Washington National Cathedral, where he acknowledged the difficulty of the moment. “This memorial service — it’s so hard to say: memorial service for Lindsey,” he stated. He also suggested Graham was now watching from above.
“Our nation needs more men and women like that great person sitting, laying — wherever he may be,” Trump added. “I think he’s up there. I think he’s watching us. I’m pretty sure of it.”
The 80-year-old president also recalled Graham’s passionate defense of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation hearing. Christine Blasey Ford had accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a high school party, an allegation he denied. Graham, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, passionately defended the nominee at the time.
“His impassioned defense of a wonderful person, a great gentleman, Justice Kavanaugh, ended a disgraceful attack on this very good man,” Trump said. He called it “Lindsey’s perhaps finest hour.” Kavanaugh attended the memorial service at Washington National Cathedral.
Trump reportedly spoke with Graham just hours before the senator’s death. Close allies told the Washington Post that Graham’s passing left the president deeply shaken. Graham was nearly a decade younger than the 80-year-old president, adding to the emotional weight of the loss.
