Clint Eastwood Didn’t Let Kevin Costner’s Ego Go Unchecked

Scott Eastwood shared a behind-the-scenes story about how his father, Clint Eastwood, had not let Kevin Costner run away with his ego.

The star also said that his father had an authoritative yet calm leadership style. He noted that his father never had to raise his voice to command respect.

Scott Eastwood recalled dad Clint giving Kevin Costner a reality check during A Perfect World

Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard, recounted a “paraphrased” version of a “legendary story” involving Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner. The setting is the 1993 film A Perfect World, which starred Costner and was directed by Clint.

According to Scott, Costner was experiencing a rapid rise to fame at the time and “maybe had a big ego.” He claimed that, on one occasion, Costner refused to leave his trailer despite being scheduled to film.

Contrarily, Clint was of the belief that actors should remain on the set rather than retreating to their trailers. Scott also recalled his father saying, “You want to learn how to make movies? You stay here with everybody else and you make the damn movie.”

As a result, Costner refusing to come out did not sit well with him. Clint allegedly instructed the crew, “Send him home.” When someone reminded Clint that Costner was needed to shoot the day’s scene, he merely repeated his decision. The crew later informed Clint that the actor had been sent home and had reacted with surprise.

Scott explained the incident as, “So he sent him home and I guess they just went to Kevin and said, ‘Hey, you’re going to go home for the day.’ … He said, ‘What do you mean I’m in the scene?’ [And they said], ‘Well, I guess you’re not anymore.’”

“The next day, he was on set ready to go,” Scott joked, suggesting the incident quickly established “the pecking order.”

Scott also revealed his own experiences in Hollywood. He spoke about his tensions with Shia LaBeouf while filming Fury. He complained that many actors have become entitled to success. Some had eventually started to believe,  “the world owes them something.”
