Savannah Guthrie is back on Today after a brief break, and her return came with plenty of laughs. Moments later, Co-anchor Craig Melvin jokingly hinted that his own time on the NBC morning show could end much sooner than expected.

According to People, Guthrie returned to Today on Monday, Aug. 10, after being away since July 21. She had stepped away from the morning show to film a full season of her upcoming Wordle game show. “Nice to be back home,” Guthrie said as she returned to Studio 1A. Melvin replied, “Glad to have you back, we missed you!” Guthrie reflected on her time away, saying, “It was fun, we had a little game show summer.”
Melvin then caught his co-anchor off guard with a humorous confession. He revealed he planned to buy a Powerball ticket and joked that viewers might never see him again if he hit the massive jackpot. “If I hit the Powerball tonight, I’m playing tonight, if I hit it, SG, it was a fun ride while it lasted,” he quipped.
Guthrie laughed and asked whether he was one of those people who would still go to work after becoming a millionaire. Melvin made it clear he had no intention of returning if he won. Guthrie then reminded viewers that the Powerball prize had climbed to $905 million, noting that plenty of people were dreaming big. The lighthearted exchange came before the show aired a segment on the near-billion-dollar lottery prize.
During her time away from Today, Guthrie also reunited with former co-anchor Hoda Kotb. Kotb shared a photo of the pair on Instagram and captioned it, “My favorite place… next to you ❤️ @savannahguthrie.”
Guthrie’s break also coincided with a difficult personal milestone. Earlier this month, she marked six months since her mother, Nancy, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home. Ahead of the anniversary, Guthrie issued an emotional public plea. She asked anyone responsible to help bring her family closure by revealing where her mother could be found.
