Duane “Keffe D” Davis continues to deny any role in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 killing. Days before his trial, Davis said that he was not in Las Vegas when Shakur got shot. Davis is charged with murder almost 30 years after the rapper’s death. Jury selection begins Monday, Aug. 10, in Las Vegas.
Keffe D insisted prosecutors cannot prove he was present that night
Davis, 63, is the only person police have arrested in connection with Tupac Shakur’s killing. Prosecutors accuse him of helping orchestrate the shooting after Shakur attended the Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand on Sept. 7, 1996. Shakur passed away six days after the shooting. Davis told FOX5 on Aug. 7, “They can’t prove it also,” while again saying he “wasn’t in Las Vegas” that night.
Davis also challenged a book that prosecutors may use during the trial. Compton Street Legend carries his name, but Davis said a ghostwriter wrote it. He said that he was paid to promote the book because he wanted to help his family. Davis also disputed a photo that shows him and his sister at the Tyson fight, saying the picture came from a New Year’s Eve party at the Sheraton hotel in 1998.
Davis has also challenged the use of a 2008 law-enforcement interview. He claimed his attorney gave him a script and told him, “That’s the only way you’re going home,” before he read it during the interview. Davis said he did not know the conversation was being recorded. His attorney, Michael Sanft, has also argued that detectives told him the interview was confidential.
Davis said he plans to keep fighting the case even if he loses at trial. “If I don’t win in this court, I’ll win in the next level,” he said. He further stated that he would testify if he had to. In the meantime, Shakur’s stepbrother Mopreme Shakur told CNN that the case has been “rough,” but the family is “cautiously optimistic” and still wants the legal proceedings to proceed.
