The honorable Judge Adam Levy will be presiding over a new courtroom show. Many may know him better as the son of Judge Judy (aka Judith Sheindlin), who famously adjudicated small-claims cases for 25 seasons on television.
Given the longevity of his mother’s show, it’s safe to say Adam has a lot to live up to in the upcoming series Adam’s Law. The Hofstra Law School graduate and former Putnam County District Attorney may find that filling his mother’s big shoes is too big of a task.
Can he do it? Not everybody is convinced…
Will Adam’s Law be able to match up to Judge Judy?
Adam’s Law promises to bring viewers “real cases” for those seeking “real justice,” according to Adam. He has credible experience and seems capable of looking over these cases, but resonating with audiences is another story. His mother’s admission that Adam “understands the law,” and has “fabulous recall,” seems accurate, but engaging viewers may be tough.
It’s obvious he and Judge Judy are incredibly similar, with Adam pulling no punches, while displaying quick wit and great sound bites. The father of three has achieved great success as a Judge, including an award-winning Drug Treatment Program. Don’t expect him or his show, however, to get any accolades for his personality.
He may understand the law, but the trailer clips feel like a carbon copy of Judge Judy’s famous assertive nature and her many faces. Even though he has TV experience on Tribunal Justice, a stand along show featuring him doesn’t look promising. Of course, knowing who his mother is will have audiences curious to begin with and draw ratings early, but that may quickly fade. Judge Judy was one of a kind and something we hadn’t seen on TV before.
It’s hard to make courtroom shows unique. That’s because it is such a specific niche, but in the trailer, Adam doesn’t act any different than his mom. No one doubts you must be tough to keep control of your courtroom. That said on TV you have to be unique and stand out.
Adam seems to be simply replicating what his mom did in hopes of building on her legacy and piggybacking off her success. Still, there’s nothing about his responses, attitude or even his reactions that is any different than his mother’s. I have a feeling a Judge Judy copycat will get boring very fast to audiences. He is bright and surely has plenty of good years ahead of him as a Judge, but not on TV.
Adam’s mom made headlines in June, appealing her defamation lawsuit about the Menendez brothers’ story. She alleges a false claim was printed; one which said she wanted the infamous brothers to get a retrial. A court dismissed the case, claiming negligence rather than malice in Judy’s name being falsely mentioned.
Adam’s Law will air on numerous CBS-owned stations beginning on September 14.
