AOC revealed through a series of Instagram stories that she will be freezing her eggs to preserve the option of embracing motherhood in the future.
Explaining the decision during a Sunday interview with ABC, Ocasio-Cortez noted, “In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country, and normalize them.”
However, AOC’s announcement seems to have sparked an intense debate on the internet, with many people criticizing the lifestyle implications attached to the process. One X (formerly Twitter) user noted, “This desire to start having children late in life is completely baffling to me. I’ll have kids in theirs 20s by the time I turn 50. AOC apparently wants to have a toddler at that age. Totally backwards and ridiculous.”
Another critic argued, “I won’t even be 40 before my oldest graduates high school in two years. No way would I have had kids this late in life.”
However, there were many AOC supporters who backed the congresswoman’s decision to freeze her eggs. “The same people who call themselves pro-family think a woman’s uterus has an expiration date they get to police. I had children later because my body did not cooperate on my schedule. If I get more chances in my 40s that is a miracle. Mock her politics not her biology,” said one X user.
