Two former MAGA firebrands abandoned the Republican Party this year, and the fallout has not settled. Tucker Carlson, 57, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, 52, have since pitched a home for voters who feel abandoned by today’s GOP. Anger at Donald Trump runs underneath it, alongside the price of the Iran conflict.
Predictably, that raised a question about the next election. The speculation surrounding Carlson’s potential 2028 campaign has raised questions about whether he could run independently, and Greene put it to rest, RadarOnline reported.
“Tucker, he’s not running for president. He said that publicly. He said that privately,” Greene confirmed to Politico Playbook.
Nothing about that settles her broader grievance. “Our argument is the two-party system is a complete and total failure. I am 100 percent totally completely disgusted with both parties,” she noted.
Carlson broke with the Republican Party first. Greene followed several weeks later. In June, Carlson described himself as politically homeless, and reportedly he has not spoken with Donald Trump since late February, when the Iran conflict started.
“I’ve been a consistent defender for 35 years of the Republican Party, I mean very consistent defender, but there’s no defending this,” he said of the joint U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran. “So no, I’m out. And if I’m out, then I think a lot of other people are out.”
Democrats gained nothing from his exit, and he said so plainly.
Greene announced her own break with the Republican Party on June 22. The former Georgia congresswoman posted on X, “There is A LOT of us that are absolutely fed up and will not support a party that betrays its voters and country.” Her follow-up echoed his: “That does not mean we are turning into Democrats either.” MTG’s third-party talk points toward a bigger project.
Iran explains much of the rupture. Donald Trump promised “no new wars” while campaigning in 2024, and both have opposed the escalation since. The 2028 ambitions of other MAGA firebrands also appear focused on building a political movement rather than launching presidential campaigns.
Carlson described exactly that to Columbia Journalism Review in early July. “I don’t want to be a candidate,” he declared. What he wants instead is a party.
“I’m going to help build a third party. There should be a good-faith effort to figure out what benefits the country,” he claimed. The MTG third party push runs parallel, though her Playbook comments centered on disgust with the existing options rather than any plan of her own.
“The parties are in lockstep solidarity with each other. That’s not a democracy. That’s a one-party state posing as a democracy, and it needs to be broken, and there’s going to be a third party, and I’m going to do everything I can to bring that about,” Tucker Carlson pledged.
