Taron Egerton says he has not seen his father since deciding to end contact
Appearing on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Egerton detailed how his relationship stands with his father, as per PEOPLE. The actor said, “I’ll always love him, I just don’t think we work very well in terms of our relationship and so there was a point where I pushed the ejector seat and haven’t seen him since.”
Egerton said that his parents had him in their early thirties and separated when he was 3. Following the split, his mother moved to Wales. She later met his stepfather when Egerton was 14.
The actor noted that he and his father maintained a fairly amicable relationship while he was growing up, but things became more difficult as he got older. He said, “My father and I, when I was growing up, were able to maintain a sort of fairly, kind of, functional relationship, but as I got older that became more difficult and I haven’t spoken to him for a number of years now.”
As his relationship with his father became more difficult, Egerton found a father figure in an unexpected place: his Kingsman co-star Colin Firth. He explained, “Colin was amazing. I remember I was going through a difficult time, I broke up with my first girlfriend and I was really aggressively partying to deal with it and was coming in … in a bad way.”
Though estranged from his father, the actor heaps praise on his mother: “But she was a great mom; I never felt that I wanted anything or missed anything.”
Taron Egerton is a Welsh actor who rose to fame as Eggsy in the Kingsman films and earned widespread acclaim for portraying Elton John in Rocketman. He has since expanded his career with acclaimed performances in projects such as “Black Bird”, “Tetris”, and “Carry-On”.
