Taron Egerton Confesses to ‘Starving’ and ‘Punishing’ Himself for His Apex Physique

Taron Egerton has opened up about the extreme lengths he went to achieve his physique in Apex. The actor confessed he worked very hard to achieve that look. He also revealed that he struggled after reaching that goal. Egerton said he still compares himself with his body from the movie.

Taron Egerton revealed he starved himself and struggled with self-loathing while achieving his physique for Apex

Egerton discussed the experience on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast on Monday. Actually, I starved myself, he said. He said he was “running myself absolutely ragged” to get to his Apex body. The 36-year-old actor admitted that keeping that look was hard for him as well.

Egerton said he often punishes himself for not looking like he did in Apex. At the time, he said his body was strong, and he had a very low body fat. Later, he received some advice from a friend which helped him to cope with these feelings. The friend told him to “smash” that “idealized version” instead of trying to “aspire” to it.

Egerton also said he was “filled with self-loathing” during shirtless filming days for both Apex and Kingsman: The Secret Service. He said he could not enjoy those moments because he had “completely lost any distorted sense of perspective.”

Looking back, Egerton said he now views those physical demands as part of the process of playing different characters. “Also, it ain’t that deep. You bounce back, you carry on. It’s fine. It’s just what it is, you know?” he said.

Netflix released Apex in April, with Charlize Theron playing a grieving woman hunted in the Australian wilderness. Egerton plays Ben, the serial killer who targets her. Before the premiere, Egerton told Netflix’s Tudum that “The extremity of the role really appealed to me.” He called Ben “just about the most f——up character I’ve ever played” and said the character felt “delicious and irresistible,” while noting that good villains can still show humanity.

Egerton said he has since learned to accept that his body will change as he takes on different characters, even though he still catches himself comparing his appearance with his Apex physique.
