The conversation took place on the August 3 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, which he hosts with Monica Padman. Eastwood, who is currently promoting Lucky Strike, spoke about the grief he experienced after his girlfriend’s sudden death, which occurred after a defective airbag in a rented 2001 Honda Civic deployed during a crash. Entertainment Weekly reports that fragments from the airbag caused a fatal injury to her carotid artery. She passed away at age 26.
Detailing it, Eastwood said, “They had a recall on the airbag and what would’ve been a fender bender most people would survive, she was essentially shot by the airbag.” The Suicide Squad actor recalled finding out about his girlfriend’s death while working on a film set. He said it was “really tough” because he had previously lost Paul Walker while filming Fury. Shepard then asked if Walker was one of his “close friends.” Eastwood confirmed that they were close friends and explained that he had little time to grieve because “the show must go on.”
In response to Eastwood’s account, Shepard described the tragedy as “one of the craziest ways I’ve heard someone’s died,” reports RadarOnline. The exchange drew criticism from fans, who felt Shepard’s questioning was inappropriate. One of the users wrote, “F**ked up to say ‘this is the craziest way anybody has ever died.’ Despicable.”
Another commented, “What’s wrong with Dax Shepard? His mannerisms are awkward.” According to RadarOnline, one person criticized Shepard, writing, “You gotta read the room that he’s uncomfortable about talking about it.” Eastwood dated Brangman for about two years from 2012 to 2014. However, the two had reportedly separated about six months before her death.
