Hoku is looking back at the troubling circumstances that pushed her away from pop stardom. Her career appeared ready to take off at the time. More than two decades later, the “Perfect Day” singer says pressure behind the scenes made walking away feel like the better choice.
Hoku calls out a former record label executive for pressuring her to sexualize her image
In a new People interview, Hoku recalled clashing with an unnamed executive at her record label. The conflict happened while plans for her second album were underway. She described the man as a “creep.” She also alleged that he was among those pressuring her to sexualize her public image.
According to Hoku, the pressure extended to her marriage. Hoku said the executive questioned whether she could divorce or annul her marriage. She claimed the label wanted to market her differently. At the time, Hoku said her husband also traveled with her because she felt “hunted” within the industry.
The singer has described the same confrontation before. During a July interview with The Knockturnal, Hoku said there was constant pressure to appear sexually available and claimed she eventually received an ultimatum. If she refused, she said she was told the label would “bury” her next album. She responded by leaving the meeting and ultimately ending that chapter of her career.
That confrontation helps explain the Hoku music career exit that followed her early success. Her official biography says she signed with Interscope/Geffen Records at 18. She later found an audience with songs including “Another Dumb Blonde” and “Perfect Day.”
“Perfect Day” became closely associated with 2001’s Legally Blonde. However, Hoku told People that the track arrived near the end of her first pop chapter. She said the movie and song ultimately became far more significant than her label initially expected.
The Hoku record label creep experience did not permanently end her interest in music. In June, she returned to the stage at Prime Video’s Elle World event. She performed “Perfect Day” as Legally Blonde celebrated its 25th anniversary. Hoku later marked the milestone on her own Instagram, reflecting on the song’s lasting connection to the movie.
Now 45, Hoku told People that she has continued writing music and is considering touring again. This time, however, she is exploring what she can accomplish independently rather than rushing back into another record-label deal.
