Dame Prue Leith, best known for The Great British Baking Show, recently made headlines after reports revealed that she had rushed to the hospital. She has now personally revealed the reason behind her hospital visit to her fans.
Prue Leith recalls losing half her vision and struggling to speak during a severe migraine attack in Yorkshire
As reported by The Sun, South African-British restaurateur Prue Leith opened up about her hospital visit in her Prue’s News column in the September issue of The Oldie magazine, released on Friday.
Prue Leith wrote, “A few weeks ago, staying in Yorkshire, I had a migraine attack. It followed a familiar path. First, I can see only half of whatever I’m looking at.”
“This is speedily followed by a bright circle of flickering, coloured lights in the upper right field of vision. If I don’t swiftly swallow one of my migraine ‘bombs’ (three pills: paracetamol, ibuprofen and sumatriptan), a crashing headache will follow,” she added.
The former university chancellor further explained how she struggled to get the words out and how she and her husband had to rush for medical attention during the frightening situation.
Leith wrote, “This time, my incomprehensible jumble of disconnected words convinced John I was having a stroke. I tried to tell him it was just a migraine, but I couldn’t string two words together.”
“He rang our doctor, who asked me, could I raise my arms? Yes. Make a fist? Yes. Did anything hurt? No. Was the side of my face drooping? No,” she added.
Prue Leith explained that someone called an ambulance, which took her to Harrogate Hospital. Surprisingly, the ambulance crew asked the television personality the same question. A nurse repeated the question when she arrived at A&E, and after a six-hour wait, the doctor asked her the same thing as well.
Despite Leith reassuring them, doctors still ordered a CT scan. After another two-hour wait, the results finally arrived at around 2 a.m.
In the end, Prue Leith told her fans that although waiting is something people may always have to deal with there, the NHS staff and personnel are cheerful and polite. She added that once your turn comes, you are treated very well.
