A federal judge has cleared the way for more previously undisclosed documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein to become public. The decision came after the Justice Department requested to unseal the records, even though Ghislaine Maxwell objected. The new release could add more information to the public record. Before releasing the files, officials must redact victims’ names and other personal information.
Federal judge clears new Jeffrey Epstein files for release despite Ghislaine Maxwell’s objections
According to RadarOnline.com, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled on Aug. 11 that the Justice Department could release additional Epstein-related documents. The ruling came in response to Maxwell’s objections to the release. Preska found a “compelling need” to open documents that remained hidden. She said keeping them sealed could leave the public with an incomplete picture of Epstein and Maxwell’s criminal activities.
The ruling applies to material that has not been made public already in Maxwell’s criminal trial, previous court-ordered releases, or releases by the Department of Justice. The documents will not be released with redactions. The transparency law requires officials to protect the identities and personal information of Epstein’s victims. The Justice Department says its Epstein library applies redactions to victim names and other identifying information.
The documents were part of a 2015 federal defamation lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre against Maxwell. A settlement was reached in 2017, before the case went to a jury trial. Giuffre died by suicide in April 2025, years after Epstein died in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
Giuffre also sued Prince Andrew in 2021 and accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 17. Andrew denied the allegations and settled the case privately in February 2022. His royal and military honorary status and patronages had been withdrawn by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, earlier when a judge ruled the complaint could not be dismissed. In October 2025, King Charles III stripped Andrew of his royal titles, peerages and HRH status.
