Aaron Rodgers is facing questions over a $37,000 donation he reportedly made toward police surveillance cameras in his previous New Jersey neighborhood. The NFL star made the donation in 2024, when he was playing for the New York Jets. However, the cameras have since raised concerns about privacy and public surveillance.

According to a FOIAball report published Wednesday, August 12, Rodgers donated the money to Cedar Grove, New Jersey. His motive was to help the local police department buy automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras.
At the time, praising the donation during a city council meeting, the town manager said, “We’ve received a generous donation of new ALPR cameras … a very generous donation that the police department is receiving.” He also mentioned, “These are very heavily used tools in the law enforcement toolkit, so it’s good to add more to our belt.”
The approved resolution was linked to an LLC based in Encinitas, California. According to FOIAball, Rodgers was the manager of the company. The outlet estimated that his donation could have paid for around 17 cameras. However, ALPR cameras have become controversial. They photograph the license plates of passing cars and can help authorities track vehicles.
Critics argue that the technology can allow widespread surveillance without people’s knowledge. Matthew Guariglia, a senior policy analyst with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told FOIAball, “This is one of just several examples nationwide now of unelected rich people getting to set the levels of surveillance in a community that they are comfortable with.” He also said, “They get to take out their checkbook and decide how everyone in that town gets to live.”
Meanwhile, he has previously spoken about concerns over Aaron Rodgers’ own safety and privacy. In December 2024, he discussed mysterious drones reportedly flying over New Jersey. Then, in March, Rodgers said he had “legitimate stalkers” and had been forced to leave his Malibu home.
