Andy Beshear says he hasn’t heard from Mitch McConnell after he left rehab
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) revealed on CBS News’s Face the Nation on Sunday that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has not responded to his requests for a health update, as reported by The Hill. Beshear, widely considered a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, shared the revelation during his Sunday morning appearance. The governor emphasized that he genuinely wants McConnell to recover well despite the ongoing lack of communication.
“I wish him no harm,” Beshear told fill-in host Ed O’Keefe. “I actually wish him good health. His boss are the people of Kentucky, and this is why the Senate feels so broken. They feel like they’re not accountable to anyone,” he added. Beshear stressed that a brief public appearance from McConnell would go a long way for Kentucky residents.
“All he needs to do is call into this show for two minutes, or Fox News for two minutes, or do a video for two minutes to the people he’s supposed to serve, but you know what? He absolutely refuses to do so,” the governor stated.
Beshear additionally directed remarks at Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) during the broadcast. He pressed Thune to take responsibility for verifying that all senators can fulfill their duties. In the meantime, McConnell, 84, remains at a rehabilitation facility following a June fall at his Washington residence.
The governor had earlier written to McConnell on July 8, requesting a health update for worried Kentuckians. He subsequently delivered a final ultimatum, demanding that McConnell either publicly confirm his fitness to serve or step down from Congress.
Still, Senate Republicans remain confident McConnell will return before his term concludes. Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) pointed out that McConnell has fought through polio throughout his life and continues progressing steadily. McConnell has already confirmed he will not seek reelection in November.
