King Charles Turns Historic 1877 Structure into Luxury Rental

King Charles has recently made a water tower on the premises of Sandringham estate, open for a romantic holiday rental.

His decision comes at a time when the King has favoured a more engaged and connected monarchy.

King Charles makes Sandringham’s historic water tower available as a luxury rental for two

According to The Blast, the property is a 19th-century water tower, built in 1877 by engineer James Mansergh to supply fresh water to Sandringham House and its surrounding grounds. Officials constructed the structure after concerns arose over the estate’s water supply, when future King Edward VII and his eldest son, Prince Albert Victor, contracted typhoid.

The estate has now converted the ancient structure into a one-bedroom romantic retreat for couples. Fox News reports that the stay starts at around £151 per night. The accommodation has been designed across four circular levels. It retains vintage features with all modern comforts. The ground floor contains a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, and bathroom, while the first floor has a bedroom suite with a king-size bed.

The second floor contains a living room with a working fireplace. It also has access to a rooftop terrace built into the tower’s original iron framework. The estate has also opened several other Sandringham properties to public stays. This includes The Folly, which sleeps six, and Gardens House, which accommodates up to eight guests.

Charles inherited Sandringham and Balmoral from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Victoria purchased Sandringham in 1862 as a country retreat for her son, the future Edward VII.

The move supports King Charles’s efforts to modernize the monarchy. Earlier this year, the King opened up public viewings of his bedrooms and library. The King’s involvement with more open access spaces signals that he is resisting the secluded and gilded image of the monarchy. He wishes the firm to be slimmed down and focus on efficiency and relatability.
