Bailey discussed the challenges of performing underwater scenes throughout the series. One particular moment became really frightening while filming in Barbados.

Bailey and Stokes recently appeared together in Entertainment Weekly‘s “Lie vs. Lie.” During this conversation, they discussed some memorable moments from filming Outer Banks. Bailey admitted that underwater work had been particularly difficult for her.
The actress joked about struggling to swim during scenes with Stokes. She said he would pretend to swim effortlessly while she struggled nearby. However, their playful conversation eventually revealed a much more serious experience.
Stokes recalled that Bailey had almost drowned multiple times during production. He then described one incident that happened while filming in Barbados. The scene involved JJ being knocked unconscious from a boat.
Bailey’s character, Kiara, had to hold JJ above the water during the sequence. “It was really hard to communicate,” Stokes continues. “I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while.’ So I jumped off the boat, and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater.”
He understood that the situation was not a part of her performance. “No, she’s drowning,” he recalled thinking at the moment.
Bailey confirmed, “I was drowning. … Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good.’” This misunderstanding made the situation even more alarming for Stokes. He recognised something was wrong. His judgement helped him intervene before the situation became deadly.
Bailey described the underwater filming as the hardest part of her Outer Banks experience. The physical demands made certain scenes especially challenging for her. Despite those difficulties, she continued to film the show’s demanding sequences.
