Kacey Musgraves gave Chicago a birthday surprise with an enormous pair of sparkling disco balls. The cheeky prop swung above her Middle of Nowhere tour opener and quickly became the night’s main character.
The country-pop star also celebrated her 38th birthday during the Chicago show. Naturally, Musgraves marked the milestone with rhinestones, cowboy style, and NSFW humor.

According to Whiskey Riff, Musgraves launched her 36-date trek at Chicago’s United Center. She performed “Rhinestoned” inside a suspended, testicle-shaped Kacey Musgraves disco ball.
The enormous prop featured two glittering spheres and a seat between them. Musgraves sat above the crowd in jeans, a white tank top, and cowboy hat.
Fans quickly gave the spectacle its unforgettable nickname: the “nutsack disco ball.” The singer clearly understood the assignment and leaned into the joke. She later shared footage from the performance on her Instagram Stories. “It takes a lot of balls to get up and do what I do every night,” Musgraves joked.
She continued, “It takes two gigantic, anatomically-correct sparkling balls, in fact.” The publication also reported that Musgraves’ grandmother attended the concert.
Musgraves then recalled her nana’s famous advice to the audience. “Honey, if your’e gonna do something, do it big and do it sparkly,” she said.
“Nana, is this what you had in mind?” Musgraves added. Apparently, Nana’s advice had taken a very literal turn.
Musgraves also called herself a “geriatric millennial” while celebrating her birthday. Reese Witherspoon joined the festivities with a sweet online message.
“Happy birthday to my mystical, lyrical, space cowgirl!” Witherspoon wrote. “Love you and your intergalactic spirit.”
The risqué staging matched the tour’s playful promotional campaign. Billboard messages previously asked fans, “Dry Spell?” and “Horny?”
Musgraves had used disco balls before, including during her 2018 Saturday Night Live performance of “High Horse.” She also recently canceled Chicago, Boston, and Brooklyn dates without explaining those changes.
The Middle of Nowhere tour now traveled across North America, Australia, and the UK. Midland, Flatland Cavalry, Carter Faith, and others joined select dates. The trek next headed to Toronto before ending February 26, 2027. Musgraves will close the tour at London’s OVO Arena Wembley.
