Taylor Swift took a dig at colleagues while she spoke about her songwriting skills in a conversation. Her ‘Confessional Songwriter’ dig drew attention from fans debating whether she was shading Olivia Rodrigo.
Taylor Swift’s songwriting comments have fans debating Olivia Rodrigo confessional style
Taylor Swift appeared for the Grammy Museum’s Icon Sessions with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. During her conversation, she spoke about songwriting skills and appeared to criticize the way some artists approach the craft.
Swift said, “Just saying something dramatic, shocking and wild doesn’t make it something that’s gonna help people, resonate with people, be an important story that sits in people’s minds, hearts and souls. We have to be purposeful. You can’t just scream something crazy” and be like, ‘I’m a confessional songwriter.'”
Swift did not specifically name any singers while making the comments.
Soon after the clip from her interview surfaced online, fans speculated whether she was aiming at Rodrigo.
One X user said, “Damn the Olivia shade girl spillll.” Another user commented, “This sums up why none of Olivia’s last 7 singles landed since 2021.”
Users also speculated whether she could have been shading Gracie Abrams or Kanye West, with whom Swift allegedly had a feud. One user said, “Gracie shade? ?.” Another said, “People claiming this is shade at Charli or Gracie Abrams when it’s clearly about Kanye West.”
Earlier, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo were on good terms, with Rodrigo having described Swift as her biggest inspiration. However, tension grew when Rodrigo did not give credit to Swift for her song “Déjà Vu,” which had similar melodies to Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” Later, Rodrigo added credits and said that she does not have a feud with anyone.
Since then, the stars have not been seen together, though neither of them confirmed their rift.
Swift’s recent remarks during her interview drew attention to speculation about her relationship with Olivia Rodrigo and other artists.
