Evan Rachel Wood called out the “Practical Magic” cast in her recent post. The actor said only Joey King, a new addition to the cast, reached out to her. Wood’s comments came after her character was recast for the sequel to her film.

Evan Rachel Wood took to Instagram to share a story about feeling left out following the “Practical Magic” recasting. The film’s sequel features Joey King, who reached out to Wood after learning about the recasting, while Wood said no one who worked on the original film had reached out to her.
Wood wrote, “I really appreciated Joey King reaching out to me because no one who worked on the original film did. She’s a sweetheart.”
Joey King later told The Hollywood Reporter that she had a conversation with Wood and appreciated the support Wood showed her and the rest of the cast. “I had a lovely conversation with her,” King said. “I just was so appreciative of the support that she showed to me and to the rest of the cast.”
King has spoken warmly about Wood, revealing that she received support from the actress as she took over the role. She expressed her gratitude as she stepped into the character.
Joey King is playing Wood’s character in the sequel. Director Susanne Bier previously explained that the film required younger versions of the characters because they are “literally out of college.” She said the casting of King and Maisie Williams felt right for the age group. Though Wood was willing to return for the role, she said she was not asked to come back. Moreover, she said that the decision was not in her control.
Practical Magic was released in 1998, with Evan Rachel Wood playing Kylie Owens when she was 11 years old. Alexandra Artrip played Antonia, Kylie’s sister. Both actresses were replaced for the sequel, with Joey King playing Kylie and Maisie Williams playing Antonia. Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to release in theaters on September 11, 2026.
