President Donald Trump offered a blunt six-word response to news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are relocating to Britain. The remark, made in the Oval Office on Wednesday, immediately drew attention. This comes as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare for an extended stay in the U.K. after about six years in California.

Speaking to reporters, Donald Trump confirmed he was not a fan of the couple and believed they had shown repeated disrespect toward the royal family. “No, I was not a fan,” he said. The president added that he “had a very good relationship with the queen. Really good. I got to know her very well.” He also praised King Charles III, calling him a “great, great guy” and noting they had known each other for a long time.
Trump did not hold back when discussing Meghan Markle specifically. “I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the queen, to King Charles,” he said. He went further, suggesting that if he were in charge of the monarchy, the couple would not have been welcomed back. “I wouldn’t have taken them back. Frankly, if I were the royal family, I wouldn’t have taken them back.”
The comments come after reports last month confirmed Harry and Meghan plan to move their family to the U.K. for an extended period. The couple left royal duties in 2020 and settled in Montecito, California, where they have lived with their two children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5. Both children are now enrolled in British schools and are expected to begin classes this month. Harry and Meghan will reportedly live at a private, non-royal residence outside London. According to sources, they will keep their California home as well.
This is not the first time Trump has publicly criticized the couple. In 2019, he called Meghan “nasty” after reports surfaced that she had described him as “divisive” before his first election. Harry also took a jab at Trump last December during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s now-defunct late-night show. He joked that Americans are “obsessed with royalty” and “elected a king (via Fox News).”
