Dancing with the Stars Producer Teases Possible Same-Sex Pairing

It’s been 33 seasons of Dancing with the Stars and the show has yet to pair a male celebrity with a male dance pro. But according to an executive producer for the show, they aren’t against the idea. So maybe fans will see this pairing sometime in the near future. Is Season 34 too soon?

After all, fans of DWTS have seen the entire gamut of celebrities strut their stuff in the ballroom. From Bachelor Nation stars to Housewives to actors and athletes. Maybe it’s time to shake things up again and try something new?

Will we see two men paired up on Dancing with the Stars Season 34?

The question came up in a May 2025 interview with Deadline. DWTS Executive Producer Ryan O’Dowd gave his thoughts on the possibility of a two man pairing while discussing Derek Hough and Mark Ballas’ incredible Season 33 Argentine Tango finale performance.

“Will we ever get to see two male dancers together in the future?”

“It’s great to dance like that in general, with the motivation behind it” the EP said referring to the tango performance. “Many people said to me they had no idea about the origins of the tango. And I had no idea it begin with two males. And so you’ve got an unbelievable performance right?”

He continued, “As for your question, I would say we are constantly looking for ways to push the envelope and produce a show that reflects and represents society as a whole. So I wouldn’t rule it out. It’s something that we’re continuing to discuss.”

And speaking of pushing the envelope, DWTS certainly isn’t above controversial casting in past seasons, which explains casting convicted criminal Anna Delvey and the subsequent bedazzled ankle bracelet.

“Indifference is our biggest enemy when it comes to casting,” Ryan shared. “And I think we’re always talking amongst ourselves about how to book people who are part of the ongoing zeitgeist conversation.”

Plus, he admitted that controversial casting drove up ratings too. Something they definitely want. So it’s a waiting game. For now, only Robert Irwin is confirmed for the ballroom next season.

Dancing with the Stars Season 34 is expected to premiere sometime in fall 2025.
