Just when you thought you’d heard the last of the Cierra Ortega racism drama on Love Island USA, here comes her grandma trying to get the last word. Yes, Cierra’s granny is now commenting on the controversy.
Love Island producers removed Cierra from the villa after social media posts resurfaced showing her using an anti-Asian racial slur. 48 hours later, Cierra ran home and jumped on Instagram, offering an apology while also claiming to have “no idea” that the slur was offensive. With only a few episodes left in Season 7, we were fully ready to move on from this. However, Cierra’s grandma has her own take on things.
Love Island USA removed Cierra Ortega, and now her grandma’s making excuses

Honestly, we’re not sure why TMZ decided to call up Cierra’s grandma, Magdalena Carrillo, but they did. In their interview, Magdalena said she felt “shocked and heartbroken” over how her granddaughter’s experience on Love Island got derailed.
According to Grandma, it’s impossible for anyone in their family to be “racist” because they’re a family of immigrants. With that in mind, she also said she felt “appalled” by the rumors that angry Love Island fans tried calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement on their family.
When asked about Cierra’s apology video, Magdalena said she watched it the moment her granddaughter uploaded it. She felt confident that her daughter “meant every word,” which would include the multiple times she tried to feign ignorance about the slur she used.
Cierra’s grandma isn’t the only family member who has weighed in on the controversy. Before CIerra got back from the villa, her parents posted a message to her Instagram, pleading with fans to ease up on the backlash. We think that, at this point, the entire family needs to take a social media break.
Love Island USA is streaming on Peacock.
