Serena Williams says she doesn’t “take shortcuts” after revealing her GLP-1 weight loss medication use

Of all the celebrities you’d expect to own up to taking weight loss medications, a champion tennis player probably wouldn’t be the top of the list. But Serena Williams has opened up about her use of GLP-1 medication. Speaking on The Today Show, the tennis star said she had been having trouble losing weight naturally following the birth of her two daughters.
“As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place, and believe me I don’t take shortcuts. I would always lose a lot of weight, and then I would stay. No matter what I did, I couldn’t go lower than that one number,” she said.
Serena mentioned she has lost 31 pounds since starting the medication in April. She notes it wasn’t just about aesthetics, but also her overall health. Diabetes runs in her family, and she has suffered with bad knees for a while: “I had a lot of issues with my knees, especially after I had my kid. That, quite frankly, definitely had an effect on maybe some wins that I could have had in my career.”
The interview came as part of a publicity campaign Serena is spearheading for Ro. The company prescribes GLP-1 medications through telehealth consultations. It’s not exactly an unbiased choice for a partnership. The sporting legend’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is an investor in the company.
