The BoykinZ have been taking the world by storm. Made up of four sisters (Kylan, Anale, Alona, and Nytere), they infuse their southern roots with R&B influence to create something special.

They recently took their music to the ultimate test: America’s Got Talent. After auditioning for Season 20, not only did they get through to the Quarterfinals, but they earned one of the coveted golden buzzers.

Reality Tea got the chance to sit down with The BoykinZ to chat about their audition experience, their music goals, and favorite AGT contestants. Here’s what they revealed…

The BoykinZ had a decade of evolution before their America’s Got Talent debut

The BoykinZ’s AGT journey has been a long time coming. The sisters have been performing together for over 10 years now. Thanks to endless rehearsals and practices, they have transformed into a vocal powerhouse group. And it’s that evolution that they would have loved to tell their younger selves was worth the journey.

“You have to get through your cringy phase to get to where you’re going. It’s okay. It’s part of growth. You’re not going to be perfect,” Anale advises. “We’re going to continue to develop even now. So yeah, don’t give up even when it’s sounding bad. Growing pains are necessary.”

Kylan also pointed out that they truly did get it out of the mud in terms of exposure and growth.

“We showed up to senior homes, to schools I mean, you name it, performing little venues like it was a concert. So just don’t take it for granted and have fun. Just keep living and dream big.”

Every day there are new details revealed about the behind the scenes of our favorite TV shows. For Nytere, it was the mingling with the judges that came as a big shock.

“The show had already started, but they were just meeting contestants backstage and shaking hands and talking to us, she shares. “And I was just so surprised. I was like, oh, whoa, this doesn’t feel like an audition anymore. It feels like a performance. We’re all going to be OK.”

Alana agreed that this fourth-wall interaction wasn’t something they anticipated.

“I think that really surprised me, being able to talk to Mel B in the back. I’m like, wait, we supposed to be talking right now? Wait, we can talk to each other? I think that was a shock. Same thing with Simon [Cowell]. We grew up, like, Simon is that judge. Like, OK, y’all, we can’t mess up. Simon, we gotta reel him in. So to meet him backstage, he was just so personable and soft and sweet. And we’re just like, oh, my gosh. What?”

This is, in fact, a competition. But that doesn’t mean that The BoykinZ aren’t rooting for some of their fellow AGT contestants. One being comeback singer Jessica Sanchez.

“I saw her YouTube videos growing up, seeing her Beyoncé covers, and I’m like, she’s amazing. So to actually see her live from the side of the stage, I was just totally blown away. And she’s so sweet,” Kylan gushes.

Anale also mentioned the unexpected bond with fellow golden buzzer winner, Lightwire.

“The dancers were amazing. Their emotional performance was so kind. After they got the golden buzzer, we were all celebrating, dancing backstage. And then we went, and then I was like we got some of their energy, because it was like, how’d that happen? Back to back golden buzzers, and they celebrated with us when we got out the door. We were dancing, and it was just so much fun. And it felt like family, it really did.”

AGT is just the beginning for The BoykinZ

Regardless of their AGT outcome, Season 20 isn’t going to be the last you see of The BoykinZ. They are just getting started and have some major plans for the future.

“We want it all. The Grammys. Touring. We just sold out our first headlining show here in Georgia at Eddie’s Attic. Like, these people paid to come see us. This is wild,” Kylan she shares.

Anale also teased that they have a lot of music coming in the pipeline.

“We can’t wait for our album to come out. There’s so much we have in store and we’re just ready to release it. We’ve just been rehearsing. But yeah, we want it all. Everything.”

America’s Got Talent airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
