Bruce Willis’ Wife Emma Heming Was Considering Divorce Before Dementia Diagnosis

The relationship between Bruce Willis and wife Emma Heming Willis has gone through its share of bumps and bruises. At one point, it looked to be over. The wife of the actor famous for the Die Hard franchise is opening up about how rocky their marriage used to be.

Prior to the Hollywood star’s dementia diagnosis, it appeared as though his marriage to Emma was falling apart. The model and businesswoman is currently the legal caretaker for her husband. Controversially, she decided to move him to a separate home, believing it was in his best interest and for the safety of her and their two daughters.

It’s not been an easy time for Emma since her husband’s health issues, but things were just as hard before. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Emma says she’d previously considered divorcing Bruce. “I felt like my marriage was crumbling.” She worried before his diagnosis that the now-retired film star had fallen out of love with her. “What is going on? This is not the person that I married. Something is just so off. And I just couldn’t figure it out,” Emma added.

For a while, she says Bruce was like a different person, and she had no idea why. She realized in November 2022 that his continuous strange behavior wasn’t normal, but she had no idea that it could be frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

“FTD doesn’t scream, it whispers,” said Emma. “It’s very gray to know where Bruce stopped and where his disease kicked in.” She adds that she “started noticing his stutter started to come back, but I never in a million years thought that was a symptom of FTD.”

Emma began to grow frustrated, feeling that the change in Bruce had something to do with her and not a disease. “It’s like you’re banging your head against a brick wall. You’re just like, where is the miscommunication coming? What is happening within our relationship?”

When the diagnosis came, Emma called it a relief knowing all the strange behavior wasn’t something Bruce was doing intentionally. “I have heard so many other couples that have gone through this where they just can’t figure it out [and] think it’s a marital problem, but in fact, it’s a symptom of a disease,” Emma said.
