David Letterman on Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension: ‘Trying To Suck up to an Authoritarian Criminal Administration’

You can add David Letterman to the list of celebrities denouncing ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel.

The late-night host’s time on the network appears to be ending after ABC suspended him and took Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air indefinitely for his remarks on the Charlie Kirk shooting.

David knows a thing or two about dealing with network executives during his days at NBC. The My Next Guest Needs No Introduction host had some strong words for ABC and their treatment of Jimmy. “It’s ridiculous,” David said. The former Late Show host on CBS also said that ABC is “trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office.”

Numerous celebrities have come out in support of Jimmy including Jimmy Fallon and David’s successor on The Late Show Stephen Colbert whose show will end next year.

David has kept in contact with Jimmy Kimmel since the disciplinary action against him was taken. He says he’s sitting in bed taking nourishment and is going to be fine. David had a message for ABC via the Daily Mail. “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful.”

Officially, Jimmy hasn’t been fired, but reports are that he’s trying to get out of his deal with ABC. His comments about the political activist’s assassination didn’t go over well with TV station conglomerate Nexstar, which said they “strongly object” to Kimmel’s comments. Nexstar is an affiliate of ABC. Sinclair, which operates as the largest media affiliate group for ABC, is asking Jimmy to issue a “direct apology” to Charlie’s family and make a “meaningful personal donation.”

There is less than a year reportedly remaining on Jimmy’s ABC contract, which, if true, might make this imminent breakup a lot less costly for both sides.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been a staple of ABC’s late-night lineup since 2003.
