In his upcoming memoir, former King of Spain, Juan Carlos, addresses the rumors that he had an affair with Princess Diana in the 80s. His book, titled Reconciliation, describes King Juan’s visit with Diana, King Charles III, Prince William and Prince Harry between the summers of 1986 and 1988.
Rumors of a tryst began circulating after Princess Diana and her family visited King Juan’s summer home in Palma de Mallorca. King Juan was known for his many extramarital affairs, which were thought to have led to the rumor.

King Juan describes Diana as “cold, taciturn, distant, except in the presence of the paparazzi,” according to The Telegraph‘s October 29 book preview. Diana never publicly addressed the affair rumors. However, she did describe King Juan as “a little too attentive”, according to Andrew Morton’s book, Ladies of Spain. Diana also reportedly referred to King Juan as “a very libidinous man.” Diana told friends nothing happened between her and the king. She also confided that she was not comfortable in a room alone with him.
Before her death in August 1997, there were rumors Diana had other affairs throughout her marriage to Charles. She did not speak of any publicly, other than a romance with Household Cavalry officer James Hewitt. James’ book, Princess in Love, described the couple’s five-year-long romance. The couple met at a party in 1986. In interviews before her death, Diana expressed her love for James. She also revealed disappointment in their relationship that led to its demise.
It was not just King Juan involved in extramarital affair rumors during Charles and Diana’s marriage. Charles and his current wife Camilla, reportedly had a secret relationship that Diana was well aware of. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” the Princess once said. “I take some responsibility that our marriage went the way it did. I’ll take half of it, but I won’t take any more than that, because it takes two to get in this situation.”
