Prince William is currently in Brazil for several charity engagements. On his third day in Rio de Janeiro, he popped by the towering Christ the Redeemer statue. It may look like the monarchy’s version of a regular tourist snap, but the photo may actually have a rather poignant purpose behind it. It may have been a nod to his mom, Princess Diana.

William’s photo is seemingly a nod to a similar snap his mom, Princess Diana, took 34 years ago. Diana visited Brazil in 1991 with King Charles (Prince Charles back then).
The trip was a special one for the future monarch. A royal spokesperson said: “The Prince has loved meeting so many people from across Rio over the last few days. He’s been incredibly struck by the number of people who fondly remember his mother’s visit to this beautiful city,” per People.
The future king is in Brazil for several royal engagements, including the Earthshot Prize award ceremony, which takes place tonight. Other guests will include Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes.
William also attended the United for Wildlife Summit, which aims to stop the illegal trade of endangered animals. He said in a speech at the event: “Our task here today is clear: We must put a stop to the criminal networks driving environmental crime and destruction. We must stand alongside those who, every day, are standing up and defending nature. We must recognize and celebrate these protectors, not just in words but through our actions. And we must act together.”
The Prince has been taking on a number of high-profile engagements in recent months, including attending events on behalf of the King, who is still battling cancer. Some royal experts even say that William is considered the unofficial monarch.
