When Cynthia Bailey began her journey on Real Housewives of Atlanta, it was a big get for the show. Having one of the first successful Black models of our time appearing on the program certainly didn’t hurt the ensemble cast. Cynthia had a very close relationship with NeNe Leakes, which was tumultuous at best, but it managed to sustain several seasons of drama. Cynthia also had an interesting marriage with Peter Thomas. Mostly Peter grifted her money for failed bars and the marriage ultimately ended because no one thought it would last in the first place.
It’s probably safe to say Cynthia is a storyline drifter. She never seems to have a main focus for herself, but does participate in other people’s trials and tribulations. But sooner or later viewers will notice a lack of substance. She’s there, she’s involved, but boring won’t keep a peach. Cynthia’s second wedding is her current focus, but we’ve been here before. Recently, Cynthia appeared on The Wendy Williams Show and Wendy Williams implied Cynthia’s daughter Noelle Robinson came out on RHOA for Cynthia’s storyline. It definitely provoked a response, and Cynthia did not let Wendy get away with it. This is the Cynthia we’ve been waiting for.
Let’s breathe for a moment, and try to give this season of Real Housewives of Atlanta a chance. It’s not the most exciting season, nothing is really happening, but let’s have faith. We’ve seen a lot of Porsha Williams’ activism, but that’s really about it. There’s a brewing feud between Porsha and Kenya Moore. Hopefully that amps up the excitement factor of the season. GIVE US SOMETHING. ANYTHING.
These two have been carrying Real Housewives of Atlanta for many years, so they’ll be the ones to save it. Some of the last few seasons have been boring as well, but have StripperGate to look forward to! The other big topic of the group currently is the upcoming nuptials between Cynthia Bailey & Mike Hill. “CHILL” is taking over this season, and the wedding conversations and preparations are in every episode. 10/10/20 can’t come fast enough!
Drew Sidora is one of the newbies on Real Housewives of Atlanta. We learned about Drew’s marital troubles with her husband, Ralph Pittman. It seems that Ralph likes to disappear for days without telling Drew where he is. I give this marriage about three months before they split.
Naturally, Drew is despised by fellow peach-holder Kenya Moore because she is new. Kenya and LaToya Ali, the other addition to the RHOA cast, took an instant dislike to Drew at Cynthia Bailey’s wine testing party. In fact, Kenya called Drew a “stray.”
During these trying times, we take what we can get and what we are getting is more Candiace Dillard. Real Housewives of Potomac had an explosive season and part of it was due to Candiace’s award-winning performance as the “before” photo of an Oprah makeover. I would like to remind the class to keep your hands to yourself because sometimes folks who talk the talk don’t want to walk the walk.
Candiace’s trip to the wild side with Monique “Please Do” Samuels gave the show a boost. This particular #physicalaltercationbybravo garnered so much attention, LOTS of people weighed in, including other Housewives. Enter Porsha “I Wish A Bitch Would” Williams, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star and friend to Monique. Porsha implied Candy sued Mo for a money grab. Candiace responded (because she was 600 miles away), but apparently didn’t get it all out. Now Candy has something else to say to Porsha – Chris Bassett, come get your wife.
This season on Real Housewives of Atlanta, we are seeing Porsha Williams on the front lines of the Black Lives Matter movement. She has come such a long way from earlier seasons and is honoring her grandfather Hosea Williams’ legacy in the Civil Rights movement.
In June, Porsha was at a peaceful protest march in Atlanta when tear gas was used on the crowd. Porsha was arrested. In August, the RHOA star was arrested again in Louisville, Kentucky during another peaceful protest.
This season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta has been unlike any other. The focus on the harsh realities of the world we live in has transformed the lens of the show. Watching Porsha Williams fight against racial injustice has been one of the biggest evolutions EVER. In addition to the protesting, the pandemic has also been front and center this season. Cynthia Bailey’s dream wedding is turning into a possible nightmare as a result.
One thing that’s been missing a bit is the group scenes between the women. We haven’t seen Porsha interact with any of the main cast in person yet which is highly unusual. It’s only a matter of time before she and Kenya Moore reignite their long rivalry and send us even closer to Strippergate. The newbies this season Drew Sidora and LaToya Ali have also brought a much needed new vibe to the series. HIGH KEY loving this season.
2020 is not going to end without one final act of drama from former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, NeNe Leakes. After Bravo said buh-bye, she spent an unusual amount of time bashing the network that made her rich and famous. The very same platform that afforded NeNe the opportunity to step outside of the Bravo universe and into the Hollywood scene.
Somewhere along the way NeNe changed. She held the same ability to provide good shade, but she became demanding. Fighting with her co-stars was the norm. It seemed NeNe allowed the level of fame she achieved to go to her head. NeNe received approximately $2.85 million to “share her life” on RHOA, and yet she still complained. Bravo finally pulled the plug on NeNe’s antics and she launched a campaign to crucify the network amid claims of racism and being “forced out”. But if you thought NeNe had calmed down and taken a seat, you would be wrong. Now she’s calling on viewers to boycott the show – because she says so.
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills feels so far away, and yet like it happened just yesterday. This last season of RHOBH carried on the YEARS-long tradition of creating one storyline for the whole season, designed to humiliate ONE woman. Last year it was Lisa Vanderpump and puppy gate. The year before was Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave (which in hindsight, I don’t mind that one so much). The year before that was Erika Girardi and panty-gate. This year it was Denise Fu**ing Richards and an ALLEGED sexual encounter, with RHOBH’s self-proclaimed truth teller, Brandi Glanville.
Do you want to revisit any of those seasons? I don’t. Seasons that beat to death a single story are totally unenjoyable. Housewives works best, IMHO, when the show features a truly ensemble cast. Real Housewives of New York City, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City even seem to understand this implicitly. Plus, these series, along with New Jersey, Potomac, Dallas and yes, Orange County have women who are willing to show their lives. RHOBH doesn’t do either of these things and yet, it was the most-watched series in the franchise.
