Survivor: Winners At War Episode 2 Recap: Class Is In Session

No matter what school you belong to – Old School, New School, Red School, Blue School – one thing can easily be agreed on: When it comes to Survivor: Winners At War, class is officially in session. This red-hot all-winners season didn’t miss a beat following its electric two-hour premiere last week, and with this caliber of players we know that it’s only going to get better from here.

As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s episode of Survivor: Winners at War. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Survivor Season 40 Premiere Episode Recap: ‘Winners At War,’ Legacies On The Line

What an absolute dream come true. After 20 years on the air, and now into its 40th (!!!) Season, Survivor is back and is as good as ever. The nightmarish ugliness of Season 39 is but a distant memory, and all signs point to this season, “Survivor: Winners at War,” as being one of the best, most epic seasons of Survivor yet. It sure started off with a bang, and if you can’t keep up with the speed of the game, like Queen Sandra Diaz-Twine says, you need to just get out of the way.

Twenty previous winners have returned to compete in “Winners at War,” with a new Reality-TV record-prize of 2 million dollars waiting at the finish line. That’s a lot of money y’all. Perhaps of equal (or OK, lesser) overall importance, these winners are all placing their legacies on the line. Some that are thought of as the “greatest” may reveal – up against other winners – to be less than. While some “lesser” winners may end up truly being thought of as the greatest of all-time.

Some legacies have already began to shift, rise and slide following the first two-hour episode of Season 40, “Survivor: Winners at War.” And it’s a dream come true to be given the chance to continue to analyze and dissect this game that I love after all this time. So let’s do this, shall we?

Get Ready for ‘Winners At War’ As Survivor Kicks Off Its 20th Anniversary Season!

“Excitement” doesn’t quite do justice to how I’m feeling right now. We are literally just days away from the beginning on not just Survivor‘s 40th (!!!) and 20th-Anniversary Season, but the occasion is being celebrated with the long-awaited, highly-anticipated “all winners” season. Yes, “Survivor: Winners At War” will feature 20 previous Sole Survivors all vying not only for the increased TWO million dollar prize, but for the unprecedented title of “Best of the Best.”

I’m shaking just thinking about this season, and I can’t wait to bring you this special look ahead (and a look back) to the best Reality Competition Show that there ever was, or ever will be. There’s lots to get to, not just the new twists that Season 40 has in store (Fire Tokens???), but we’re going to take a look at each of the 20 returning previous winners and where they “rank” on my all-time list heading into this season…and while I’m super-ecstatic as to the 20 winners that ARE returning, we’ll also examine the ones that were left out, and whose legacies are at stake the most.

If you have “tuned out” of Survivor over the years – especially after the exhausting Season 39 this past Fall – you will WANT TO GET BACK INTO IT THIS SEASON! I’ll be right here Recapping the entire Season 40, and am happy to once again have Survivor Legend and two-time player Erik Reichenbach on-board as well contributing his unique Survivor artwork and creativity each and every week…just wait what he drew up for this special “pre-season” look ahead!

Let’s get to it, shall we?

CBS loves a reality crossover! Unfortunately for viewers, Survivors turned Survivors turned Amazing Race contestants turned Survivor (you get my drift) Rob and Amber Mariano have been replaced with a new over-exposed celebreality power couple.

Rachel Reilly and Brendon Villegas were the Big Brother couple many people loved to hate. We watched the pair fall in love on Season 12 of the hit show (who thought that would last?) and get engaged before returning for Round Two on the following season. Season 13 brought more of the same for the hot-and-cold, drama-loving pair when they returned with other former BB twosomes to switch up the show’s dynamic (sound familiar, Survivor?) with Rachel going on to win the $500,000 grand prize after her honey got the boot (yet again).

Well, now it seems the couple will have another chance to win over our hearts as they compete in the twentieth season of Amazing Race. Thanksgiving weekend, there were several reports that the new season was filming at Los Angeles International Airport, and among the traveling partners were Rachel and Brendon. Someone has to fill Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca’s shoes though, right?

Perhaps the pair will be the first CBS power couple to actually win Amazing Race. There have been several past crossover pairs, but only Rob and Amber have come close to taking home the title when they finished second on Season 7… not to be confused with when they traveled the world on the “all-star” edition of the series. If these airport sightings are accurate, maybe the couple will find the popularity needed to have CBS foot the bill for a televised wedding!

The new season of Amazing Race is set to premiere early next year.

DID YOU WATCH RACHEL AND BRENDON ON BIG BROTHER? HOW DO YOU THINK THE PAIR WILL DO IN THE AMAZING RACE? THOUGHTS ON CBS RECYCLING REALITY STARS?

It’s the kind of news I hate having to write about, but former Survivor winner Ethan Zohn’s cancer has returned.

In an interview with People, the thirty-seven year old reality television star explains that doctors told him on September 14 that the cancer had returned to his chest. Ethan had spent the previous twenty months in remission from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, even while in remission, Ethan was concerned that the cancer could come back.

He states, “I don’t want fear or cancer to define me, but it’s always in the back of your mind.” Ethan continues, telling the magazine, “It’s localized in my lung area, [but] it’s good that it’s not all over my body.”

Ethan reveals that his long time girlfriend, another Survivor winner and Zohn’s recent Amazing Race partner, was with him when he received the news. Of thirty-year-old Jenna Morasco, Ethan admits, “We’re both filled with fear and anger and anxiety and gratitude and frustration. But there’s so much love there. It’s this whole spectrum of emotions.” He is grateful for his love of eight years who “[is] taking it like the rock star that she is.”

Ethan began a new form of chemotherapy on October 18, which will continue for twelve weeks. SNG-35 is a type of treatment that only targets cancerous cells, meaning, says Ethan, “I won’t lose my hair again.”

Once finished with the chemo, Ethan will likely go through another stem-cell transplant. One of his brothers is hopefully a match for Ethan, although his doctors won’t tell him which one. Zohn explains, “They didn’t want me to start treating one differently than the other. Of course my whole family is taking bets on who it is.”

Not the kind of person to let this news take over his life, Ethan reveals that on November 6, he will run the New York marathon as planned. He is participating in the race to raise money for his Grassroot Soccer organization, which Zohn founded to promote AIDS awareness, as well as prevention and education of the disease.

“The doctors think I’m crazy but they gave me the okay,” Ethan admits. He continues, “Cancer isn’t going to slow me down. I want people to know that you can still live a fulfilled life and move forward.”

What an amazing attitude to have and one that will definitely help him on his road to recovery. We here at RT are praying for Ethan’s quick return to good health!

The new season of the Amazing Race marks a decade of entertainment from the CBS series, so expect to see lots of new twists and turns.

The nineteenth season is highlighted by a cast headed up by former Survivor winners Jenna Morasca and cancer survivor Ethan Zohn. Joining them are a retired NFL player, Olympic snowboarders, a set of twins, the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world, and, of course, a pair of former Vegas showgirls…just to name a few.

This year’s race around the world will span four continents, twenty cities, and almost 40,000 miles of global travel. The eleven teams will start their trek in Southern California before heading to Taiwan. Thailand, Denmark, Malawi, and Indonesia will be other destinations for those fortunate enough to survive elimination.

This season, hosted by Phil Keoghan, also boasts a new “Hazard” penalty and the first ever double elimination. The new season of Amazing Race premieres Sunday, September 25, on CBS. Meet the teams below!
